The Woodville Big Tree is a short drive from Ebb & Flow Rest Camp and an easy walk from the parking area to the 810 years old Yellowwood tree. The tree is 34m high and 8.8m in circumference. The ‘Big Tree’ is a yellow-wood tree estimated to be 850-years old is a great attraction in Hoekwil, especially for hikers. A clearly marked path leads into the forest, crossing a stream several times. Many of the trees are labelled so one can identify them. This is a circular trail extending about 2 km. There is a designated picnic area and kids can play in the streams. There are ablutions and wheelchair-friendly walkways through the forest.
Start: The Woodville Big Tree is a short drive from Ebb & Flow Rest Camp and an easy walk from the parking area to the 810 year old Yellowwood tree. Take the Hoekwil turn-off just outside Wilderness on the Knysna side. This road becomes the old Knysna-George Road. Follow it to the turn-off to the picnic site on the left, approximately 16km from Wilderness.
Permits: A free self-issue permit is available in the parking area, at the entrance to the forest.
